(1) The Hanjin shipping bankruptcy has a small beneficial impact as international shippers scramble to find space for immediate cargoes...

(2) Last minute seasonal (Christmas) cargoes are important... America always needs more salad shooters and such...

(3) The BDI is a fashionable index but not that important...

Coming from the recent international nickel conference:

China's internal stocks of ore are all but used up and both Indonesian and Philippines have blocked ore exports
LME stocks are dropping fast, for the first time in decades
The Philippines have shut five plants due to pollution problems
Recent low prices have resulted in many processors cutting back on basic maintenance (eg furnace rebuilds) so they will be unable to respond to an increase in demand.

The result is that nickel miners and processors are expecting to see a supply pinch in a couple of years. There will be a scramble to rebuild and debottleneck.
