Questions on board history
#11
Pretty sure I started following Bonner or Wiggin at DR back in 1999. They had a forum then, but I didn't join as it didn't appeal to my neocon self at the time. When I did join in 2001 (late Sept.) board searches went back to 1999, so I assume that was the start.

The DR web site kept the forum going with regular injections of new blood eager to rehash old arguments and get crushed by certain board regulars who clearly enjoyed the sport. That's what made the DR board really interesting IMO, interesting and extremely informative. What we have left are mostly members with very rigid opinions. I can deduce the content of most threads from the title and OP before I start reading. This place needs new blood far more than old egos IMO.

I would like to see new blood as well. I did add the social sharing links at the bottom of each thread, so feel free to use them. Posting to FB groups you belong to or twitter may pick up some new blood. If your not on FB well then don't worry about it. Smile

You know, I *thought* I remembered posting on the DR board before the Y2K event, but when I pondered it it seemed it couldn't possibly have been THAT long ago.  But maybe it was.  20 years!  I'm thinking about where I was in life 20 years ago, October 1996.  It was earlier that year that I spent the money for my first new PC so that I could access the internet from home.  I'd had computers before but they were things my parents had come across cheaply, or were very old, and didn't have the features that were just becoming available:  a fast modem to make internet access more fun, a CD-ROM, and a 16-bit sound card to allow CD-quality audio instead of bleeps and bloops.
So, late 1996 likely saw me spending a fair bit of time exploring what the internet had to offer.  Despite what the song says, the internet is for more than just porn, and one of the reasons I wanted my own internet connection was to be able to participate in discussion groups, like this one.  At the time, they were more likely to take the form of an email list, or a newsgroup (using a different protocol, not the web.  Internet oldtimers may remember newsreader software.)  I don't know when I discovered the DR board, I don't think it could be 1996, more like 1998-1999.

On the topic of new blood, I'll mention this place to some online acquaintances.  In the whole 20 years, I've kept this as a kind of secret...haven't told a soul about it.  Maybe that was a mistake on my part.

I haven't mentioned this board to others either. It's actually the only board where I don't tweak my persona to fit in.

Ahhh!  That was what it was called.  Thank you.  Yes, their entire site went down and took out all the free hosted boards.  There was never an explanation.

In regards to the DR board, if I had to do a best guess I would say around 2003 is when it went offline.  But I'm not 100% sure on that.

I suspect what closed the original DR site down was the racism and crackpot conspiracy stuff: It's not smart to be associated with wack-jobs.

Take away those two things from the internet and all you got left is porn!  Yuck yuck.

I miss Vangel

I also miss Big Sky Bob

Both marvellously easy to tease

I miss Lenny too - is he dead or in the 'big house'?

I hope he's just gone walkabout and will be back in his nice little house come winter

Somebody here https://www.quora.com/unanswered/Interne...ning-forum# is asking what happened to the old Daily Reckoning forum. I don't know if this poster is somebody on this board? Nobody has answered the question. I was going to try to answer, with a link to this board, but they make you sign up with Facebook to be able to answer.

Maybe somebody here can put a signpost there to this board?
