Beware of Windows 10S - Herring - 05-09-2017

As you may already know, more and more new PCs are being delivered with hardware such that the operating system cannot be replaced except with another one with the right cryptographic signature (search for "secure boot").

Now, MS is releasing a new version of Windows that takes away one of the main advantages of the Windows ecosystem--the ability to install whatever software you want.  Windows 10S will not let you install anything you download from a website, or still have on a CD.  The only way to install anything is from the Windows Store.

Now, Android and linux have similar concepts, like the Google Play Store and various "repositories", but there's a big difference:  you can still install things that AREN'T on Google Play.  With desktop linux, you can add other repositories if you want, you're not stuck with the one that came with your system.  Under Windows 10S (and presumably other future versions of Windows), you only get to run what MS says you can.  Avoid this product to the extent that you can...I predict that within a couple of years, PCs will start shipping with Windows 10S and secure boot enabled, so that there's no way to replace the locked-down operating system.

I predict a mass revolt against this.

We can hope.  But institutions (schools and enterprises) may prefer an OS that is tightly locked-down.  That will be enough demand to ensure that PCs with 10S and locked boot loaders are produced.  The question is whether they can convince consumers to buy these models.  I'd like to be optimistic and say "no", but I'm not so sure.
