Lose Your Home Because You Owe On Utilities Like Water? - Innocynic - 05-05-2017

The story of Flint, Michigan's water gets sadder and sadder. This might be sensationalized, but it is still a hell of a mess. Some people will be very hard pressed to raise a thousand bucks. Some can't. People shouldn't have to pay for poison.

The water crisis in Flint, Michigan, is entering its fourth year, and residents are still a long way away from having potable tap water.
But thousands of residents are now facing a new threat — losing their homes to foreclosure because of unpaid water bills.

More than 8,000 Flint residents received notices from the city threatening to impose tax liens for six months' worth of unpaid water bills, a local NBC affiliate reported on Tuesday.

Residents have until May 19 to pay the bills, some of which total nearly $1,000, or else they'll risk foreclosure on their homes, according to the report.

Flint's water crisis began in 2014 when the city switched its water source to the Flint River, resulting in lead contamination from the city's pipes to enter the water supply. The crisis has been tied to cases of lead poisoning and 12 deaths from Legionnaires' disease.

In this country that cannot happen. They can put a lien on your house but cannot evict

sounds like the right way to handle it,

but, so, you can use water for like 50 years without paying for it and without risking losing your house??????
assuming you live that long?
seems that'd make a bill much larger than the value of the house

a couple other interesting points on this Flint one,
their water (we're awash in water around here) is THE MOST expensive in the Country
the bills include SEWER processing which is much more expensive than the water.

AND if you choose to shut off your water and only use bottled water, they CONDEMN your house and evict you IMMEDIATELY.

oh, and the annual property taxes in much of Flint are equal to half the value of the house in many areas,
which is why the COUNTY tax man, OWNS nearly 50% of the parcels (many of which are abandoned)
you should come visit, looks like a 3rd world Country in many areas.

YET Politicians are all still too stupid to see what they are forcing to happen

I don't believe he said you get to use water for free.  I assume they'd cut you off after a bit.  You'd own a house with no water supply.

Yes, that's one bit of injustice that bothers me a lot.  Laws vary by state and municipality, but in many urbanized areas if the utility companies shut off your water, gas or electric (whether for nonpayment or because you ask them to) they notify the local government who will then revoke your Use and Occupancy permit.  For non-Americans, that's the magic piece of paper that says you're allowed to live in a house.  Without one, it's illegal for anyone to live there, even if you own it free and clear.  George III never imagined having that kind of control over the colonists' lives.

Correct, politicians at a higher level need to take a look and see that places like Flint need all the residents they can get--chasing people out just lowers the tax base even more.[/quote]

I laughed out loud when I saw this a couple of years ago:
